An education is one of the most beneficial things a person can get during their lifetime. Coeducation or co-ed does not only affect females in a negative way, but there are limitations for males as well. Boys are distracted by girls in the same classroom especially in middle and high school where the teens are bursting with hormones. Boys are sometimes put on a lower scale than girls because they are thought to be of lower intellect and do not get the right amount of respect they need to truly focus on their studies. Boys and girls also tend to get distracted by the opposite sex. Separation of these sexes could be the answer to these ongoing problems. Some parents believe that their children will feel awkward or incapable of interacting with the opposite sex once they leave their sexually segregated schools. In addition, some critics suggest that the act of segregating boys and girls is just as unconstuitional as separating students by race. Though some of these positions have justification, they fail to prove that the benefits of coeducation bypass those of single sex education. Studies have shown the confidence levels of boys in single sex schools exceed those of coed schools (What’s”). Similarly, girls develop better self-esteem in same sex school compared to those in coed schools. Furthermore, “there is no evidence that children who have attended co-ed schools enter adult relationships that are more stable or fulfilled” (Mullins). In addition, encouraging students of both sexes to pursue nontraditional studies allows them to learn and gain experiences in disciplines that in a coeducation setting would bring embarrassment and possibly harassment by fellow students.
