Imagine if students had a method to simultaneously reap the benefits of greater social skills, better academic skills and healthier bodies that would just take ten minutes of their day. To meditate, according to Oxford English Dictionary, is defined as “to think deeply or focus one’s mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation.” Meditation is practiced worldwide and on a daily basis by many different groups of people and for an abundance of separate reasons. This act of concentration has been around for centuries and still remains a popular remedy for emotional stability, long-term concentrative practices, improving spiritual well-being, a form of alternative medicine and even for the relief of pain. Students who were taught meditation at school reported higher optimism, more positive emotions, stronger self-identity, greater self-acceptance and took better care of their health as well as experiencing reduced anxiety, stress and depression. The benefits would be immensely powerful if it were introduced to be taught in schools. The origin of meditation dates back to ancient times, perhaps discovered by hunter-gatherers. Eventually, the act of meditation travelled and became an official practice.
