During the holiday of Rosh Hashanah, the New Year in the Jewish community, people use the week for personal judgment. In the words of Sarna, “Rosh Hashanah is about: improvement, progress, the resolve to do better”(sarna.103). This week is important for you to know about because it is for people in the jewish community, and you, to reflect about all the bad you have done during the year and to think of ways to do better in the coming year. Following your week of self reflection the holiday of Yom Kippur brings the week to an end. Unlike Rosh Hashanah where you are judging all you have done wrong in the year, Yom Kippur is celebrated as a community and it is all about atonement for your wrongdoings. Sarna tells us, “the theory of Yom Kippur is that on this day we put aside our differences and disputes and embrace the entire community”(sarna.117). Son, during this day the whole Jewish community comes together to accept people's wrong choices and have them take responsibility of their actions and to walk away for this day purged of their wrongdoings and cleansed. This is a very important week for us Jews and you need to know that this is not to make you feel bad for all of the bad things you have done but, to make you feel better after accepting
