1. Explain what the feast is about. Answer: Yom Kippur is considered an exceptionally important holiday, if not the most important in Jewish custom. In this 25 hour period, a complete Sabbath is held and no food is to be eaten nor work done the entirety of the day. Additionally, water is not consumed during this time. 2. Why is the feast celebrated? Answer: Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day in Jewish culture. The entire purpose of the celebration is to purify oneself from sins through fasting and beseeching God for forgiveness of sins through various events. It should be noted that the sins atoned during the event do not include sins committed between men, only those to God.

Answer: The Shofar is a musical horn used in numerous Jewish celebrations, it is primarily made of rams but is noted to be allowed to be constructed of other animals. There is a deep history in Jewish roots regarding the Shofar; great or important events were marked by the Shofar, coronation and times of peace were also marked, and finally the sacrifice and great times of Abraham and the conveying of the ten commandments are marked by the Shofar. How important is this holiday for the Jewish faithful? Is it a major or minor holiday? Answer: Yom Kippur is an incredibly important holiday, it is a holy day important historically and today. For these reasons, the celebration is considered a major holiday which even less devout Jewish usually attend.
4. Are there any secular or other religious influences that heighten the attention given to this particular holiday? Explain. Answer: Yom Kippur has its share of influences, mostly on others, but partially as a result of other groups. Foremost, secular groups, in particular secular Jews, along with Christians have an surprising amount of members who acknowledge the day as holy and even celebrate it. Secondly, while less an influence, Israel deems Yom Kippur as an important legal holiday and much commerce is lessened in this day. Finally and slightly controversially, Yom Kippur is influenced by a “reform movement” which removed a vow pray as a result of retorts regarding the untruthful vows of Jews.
