The characteristic that sets humans apart from mammals is the ability to communicate with one another. To be able to communicate with one another, there is what is commonly known as languages. Languages have been around for thousands of years; dating back to Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. One of the oldest languages is Latin; most all European languages are derived from it. Unfortunately, there is no universal language that everyone speaks. So in order to better communicate, we learn other languages. With time and effort, learning other languages can be very beneficial to humans. Nowadays, being bilingual can help with test scores, attentional control, and academic achievement. Learning a second language not only has a positive effect on the way one communicates, but can also increase one’s intellectual abilities.

Depending on what age a student learns another language, can vary the benefits from it. There is no studies that have proven learning languages earlier is better for the brain (Wanjek). However, when students were brought up bilingual, they had better working memories (Psy Blog). A study was conducted to measure episodic and semantic memory in children. Sixty boys and girls were the test subjects; thirty were monolingual and thirty were bilingual. The study proved that where bilingualism was present, that the bilingual brain organized information in a way that creates advantages (ACTFL). The brain has this way of organization because the brain has to monitor what language is appropriate to the situation which requires excellent multitasking (Psy Blog).
