Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. His mother Ann

Dunham from Wichita, Kansas and his father Barack Obama Sr., was from Kenya, Africa. They

met as students while studying at the University of Hawaii. They married on February 2, 1961

and Obama was born six months later. As a child Obama did not have a relationship with his

father. When Obama was an infant his father left him and his mother to pursue his studies in

economics at Harvard University. Obama’s parents separated and eventually they divorced

when was about two years old in March 1964. Eventually Obama’s father returned back to

Kenya, Africa.

Obama’s mother Ann remarried in 1965 to Obama’s stepfather Lolo Soetoro. Lolo Soetoro

was a University of Hawaii student from Indonesia. Obama, his mother Ann and stepfather Lolo

moved to Jakarta, Indonesia. Obama lived there until he was about 10 years old, but due to

his mother’s concerns for his safety and education, she decided to move Obama back to Hawaii

to live with his maternal grandparents. Obama’s mother and his half- sister eventually moved

back to Hawaii too.

While living in Hawaii with his grandparents Madelyn and Stanley Dunham, Obama

attended Punahou Academy from fifth grade until he graduated from high school. He excelled

in basketball and graduated with academic honors in 1979. After Obama graduated from high
