In the Curious Incident, Christopher is shown to be different through his behavior problems, inability to socialize and his odd choices of likings. Mark Haddon’s novel, The Curious incident of the Dog in the Night-time was published in 2003, and was hugely criticized for its inaccurate interpretation on the Asperger’s syndrome, by the people suffering from it if not directly pointed at. However, this was one of Christopher Boone’s, the main character’s, most defining features as it made him unique. This made it difficult to talk to others and interact with them very well, making his investigation on the death of the dog just that more harder and intriguing. This problem interferes and makes socializing very hard for Christopher as he cannot understand jokes, this is shown in chapter 13, ‘I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them’. Then his example of a joke which his father had told him, ‘His face was drawn but the curtains were real’. He explains how he understands how it is funny, because of how drawn has multiple meanings, however, if he were to tell himself this, it would only confuse him as having something mean different things at the same time is, ‘hearing three different pieces of music’ and ‘uncomfortable and confusing’. Another thing his behavior problem interferes with is, are his interactions with others and how he cannot understand what others may be trying to do to help him. An example of this is in chapter 211, ‘a man came up to me’, ‘he said, ‘You look lost.’ However, instead of accepting that the man is trying to help Christopher, his reaction is violent even if he doesn’t harm the man ‘So I took out my Swiss Army Knife.’ This shows Christopher’s inability to understand that others may be able to think on their own as he doesn’t understand why someone would come to him on their own. The problem is displayed in chapter 163, ‘when I was little I didn’t understand about other people having minds’, and although he says, ‘I don’t find this difficult now’, it is still evident that he is still struggling with the idea of other people having minds, even if he can cope with the idea better than when he was younger.
