With the recent popularity spike of social media, presidential candidates have been using it as a platform for their election campaigns in order to encourage online participation. The Internet has become an extremely popular tool in online political participation. With this recent internet popularity, more and more people are spending their time online, especially the young adults, ages 18-29. The key to political participation lies in the knowledge of the presidential candidates, their platform, and the ability to register and vote. In fact, the 2012 presidential election “saw increasing sophistication of online campaigning and improved integration of online and offline participation opportunities” (Ginsburg, 215).…
Red Herring The first fallacy is an example of a Red Herring, which has no latin translation. A red herring is a fallacy that draws the argument away from the issue currently being discussed to an argument that the person feels they can better relate to.…
One occasion an illogical fallacies is used is when Arthur’s parents are told the half-truth of the scholarship to St. Joseph’s. His parents were told that Arthur that they wouldn’t have to pay for Arthur’s tuition to St. Josephs. However, what they didn’t know was Arthur would be receiving a partial scholarship to the school and if he had produced results for the basketball team then he would receive a sponsor for the rest of his tuition. For Arthur’s case, he was wasn’t providing good enough results because he wasn’t physically growing unlike his teammates which deemed him unworthy enough. On the other hand, William Gates was given this opportunity and went on to excel as a basketball player.…
On election day, the Democrats arrived at polls armed and ready to assault blacks who had come to place their vote. Voters rigged the ballot boxes and, as expected, the Democrats ended up winning by a large majority. The next day, Alfred Waddell created a Committee of Twenty-five and led its first meeting, during which a series of resolutions collectively known as the White Declaration of Independence were passed. These resolutions included the forced exile of Alex Manly, the closing of the Daily Record, and the expulsion of all current black officeholders, The White Declaration of Independence was presented to the Committee of Colored Citizens (a group of nine black men considered to be powerful in Wilmington) as an ultimatum, and they were given until 7:30 the following morning to deliver a response (Umfleet, 94). Due to complications with delivery, the…

Bandwagon is a term used to describe a group of people who participate/like a certain thing only due to the fact that it is currently popular. The towns’ people in “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, may not particularly like the Lottery game they play every year; however, proceed along with this game due to the fact everyone else does. It takes a special kind of person to swim against the current and to speak out on what she/he believes. Tessie becomes alienated because she is different from the bandwagon. Human nature is to challenge the rules and regulations set in place that appear to make the world a “safe place.”…
In 1791, the bill of rights was ratified, included within it, the first amendments to the constitution. Which protected the freedom of speech, press, peaceful assembly, religion, and petition. It destroyed the old system of complete governmental control and allowed the press to openly critique the state and those who ran the state. The media became the bridge crossing the gap between rulers and ruled, protected by the foundational law of the country. After two hundred and twenty five years, as well as countless technological innovations later the way news is presented has changed.…
Divide and Conquer: Partisanship Government Partisanship polarization is not a new concept to American politics. The Founding Fathers were divided on the philosophies of federal government between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. American politics saw a decline of partisan politics during the 1950s and 1960s, however there was a resurgence in the late 1970s that has yet to cease (Brewer, 2005, p. 219). While the political elite have been divided along partisan lines, the results of their division have extended to the American populace. The division of the American populace makes the governing by the political elite an easier task.…
2) The winner-take-all system in the electoral college is each state gets so many electoral votes based upon their population. When people within those states vote for the candidate that they choose, the person with the most votes gets all of the electoral votes in that state. While the other candidate(s) get zero electoral votes from that state. How candidates run their campaigns is seriously affected by the winner-take-all system in the electoral college. The campaigns are affected because a candidate is not going to spend their time campaigning in a state that they are obviously going to lose, an example being the opponent’s home state.…
Groupthink is led by the influence from authority and peers. Groups grow to think alike and become convinced there is only one “right” viewpoint. Groups think it is disloyal to take suggestions for alternatives. Groups have narrow perspective and most likely believe they are fully right.…
In Ecclesiastics Solomon wrote, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun" (Ecc.1:9, NIV). While surveying the historical presidential campaigns of George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, and modern day hopefuls, some tactics and strategies have changed, while other aspects are surprisingly quite similar. One difference is America's first three presidents did not personally campaign, rather political party newspapers, their media of the day, did both the debating of the issues and "mercilessly criticized their respective opposing candidates" on their behalf ("Thomas Jefferson: Campaigns and Elections"). Public opinion and the media held prominent roles in campaigning…

The Electoral College; the Backbone of Voting Now a days, we live in a world where not many people know a lot about politics. The Electoral College electors, which is composed of five hundred and thirty-eight members from both the House of Representatives and the Senate, are usually nominated by political parties during state conventions.…
