What is the B-1 Lancer? The Rockwell B-1 Lancer is a four-engine supersonic variable-sweep wing, the jet-powered heavy strategic bomber used by the United States Air Force (USAF).
A. The B-1 was first envisioned in the 1960s 1. a supersonic bomber with Mach 2 speed. 2. It was developed into the B-1B. a. primarily a low-level penetrator with long range. b. Mach 1.25 speed capability at high altitude. B. To penetrate the soviet’s air space with a nuclear arsenal, the USAF wanted to replace the B-52 with supersonic bombers in the early 1970s. 1. The Congress had a hard time justifying the cost of this plane. a. President Regan decided to revive the B-1 program. b. The B-1B Lancer entered service in late 1980’s. 2. No need for the nuclear bomber after the collapse of the Soviet Union. a. The USAF modified its’ bases. b. The B-1 bomber starts delivering a different kind of force.
