Huber described leadership as “an activity of human engagement and a relationship experience founded in trust, communication, inspiration, action, and servanthood” (2014, p. 2). Exceptional leaders gain staff respect by building a mutual relationship of trust. The relationship strengthens over time as staff becomes increasingly comfortable approaching their leader with questions, concerns, etc… and their leader responds with active listening, suggestions aimed towards guidance and encouraging staff to think critically and develop answers for themselves. Communication should be mutually open and respectful. A leader needs to be able to emit they are approachable and available at all times. Allowing negative behaviors or attitudes to create discord in the workplace will weaken and create chasms within the staff, leading to an unproductive and divisive workforce. A leader has to be able to recognize potential negative thoughts, behaviors, attitudes within themselves, self-correcting when these occur so that the leader can model what is needed and expected within their staff. Leaders also need to have an acute awareness and sensitivity regarding their staff’s feelings, when a staff member struggles a leader understands the need for increased support and guidance.
In the article, Active learning and leadership in an undergraduate curriculum: How effective is it for student learning and transition to practice, the author states, “Nursing students need to be developing leadership skills prior to entering the workplace to ensure they are able to meet the challenges associated with organizations and the cultures present in nursing, along with having highly tuned communication skills and leadership attributes that contribute to best patient care and outcomes” (2013, p. 83).
