On a superficial level, the root of the problem is the drive to compete and the drive to compare oneself to others. A political solution for this “compare and compete” problem can be theorized. The first potential solution that comes to mind is to find a way to equal the playing field until there becomes no need for comparison with others because we are all equal, and through this equality brings the end of competition, for what is achievable by one, is achievable by all. One way to accomplish this would be for the political power (i.e. the government) at hand to invent a means that impeded on any one individual’s advantage in society, whether it be intelligence, beauty, creativity, etc.. In Kurt Vonnegut’s short story, “Harrison Bergeron”,…
On the tenth anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez a labor union organizer and civil rights activist made an article of a religious organization. This organization was established and which was devoted to helping those in need. Cesar had a valid rationalization about non-violent resistance. Chavez also uses some prime examples to get his own point across. He applies repetition, alliteration, and many other rhetorical devices and terms to the article.…
Propaganda is used all over the world, it is a way of spreading word to promote a cause. It is frequently used to sell a belief system and is ideological. In "Brave New World," the World State uses propaganda to equalize the society no matter the consequence. On the other hand, the Nazi party used it to acquire and maintain power, they also used it to implement Nazi policies. Many different techniques of propaganda are used by these two "worlds," but there are three major techniques used in both; Bandwagon, Name Calling and Glittering Generalities.…
The government used these propaganda films to frighten the people of the United States. The government’s goal was to show us the threat of communism and the Soviet Union’s philosophy of having all the world’s people overthrow their nation’s governments and adapt communism as their way of life. These films showed how in reality these communist leaders had complete control of every aspect of their lives. Our government used these films to show the lack of freedom in communism everything was for the good of the state. These films stressed no religious freedom, no one could own property, etc.…

Taking one’s thoughts and ideas then convert them to putting the words on paper, it is a very simple concept yet it can have such a strong impact it has the power to change the world as a whole. This is demonstrated in 1925 when Adolf Hitler, also known as the Führer, published his novel Mein Kampf which included his views on nation and race and the anti-semitic ideology that many agreed and related with. With this novel the Führer was able to convert a whole civilized nation and turn it into the sinister super power that was Nazi Germany thus leading to the worst war this world has ever seen and the evil acts committed at concentration camps such as Auschwitz and all with only the use of words, which can be the most powerful be the most…
The history of humanity was full of accomplishments. However, it was also full of dramatic failures and emotions that accompanied them. Most people know the taste of fear. Many others have learned the smell of panics. Yet, the concept of moral panics is relatively new.…
As we see time and again the rise and fall of Dictators ,Tyrants, leaders, and governments. From as early as the 1600s to modern day society we have seen how political leaders use various tactics in order to achieve their political agendas. They use different types of tactics such as media, rallies, speeches to send false messages to their people to persuade the people to follow them. This is called propaganda which is spreading the ideas based on biased or misleading nature to help promote or publicizes a particular institution or particular cause. We have seen different leaders use different forms of propaganda such as Nazi 's, the Soviets, North Korea, 1990s Yugoslavia, and many more regimes.…
the tactics that the author discusses is “The Plain-Folks Appeal” where propagandist make the public thing that they have a connection to them, either by telling them that they are just like them or telling their life stories which may or may not be true. In an essay from the course text, “Propaganda: How Not to Be Bamboozled” the author describes how it works, “The plain-folks appeal is at work when candidates go around shaking hands with factory workers, kissing babies in supermarkets, and sampling pasta with Italians, fried chicken with Southerners, bagels and blintzes with Jews” (Cross). This is exactly what Trump did, during the many rallies he held he made it clear that he was not a politician, just a business man who wanted to fix the…
In “The Ethics of Compassion”, The Dalai Lama explains how we should strive for fulfillment of having compassion towards everyone and not just the people closest to us. The Dalai Lama himself has not accomplished such a task, “Most people, including myself, must struggle even to reach the point where putting others’ interests on a par with our own becomes easy” (Dalai Lama). It takes time to be able to have compassion towards people you don’t even know, but it must be understood that everyone wants the same thing, happiness. The Dalai Lama successfully connects to the reader using examples that the reader can relate to in their lives that appeal to logos and pathos.…
In the U.S., votes on propositions, polls, and even the election of the President are influenced by campaigns put on by candidates and even average citizens. A campaign is an organized course of action to achieve a particular goal (Oxford, 2015). All throughout history, propaganda has been adopted as a way to manipulate the opinions of masses. Propaganda is chiefly derogatory information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view (Oxford, 2015). In more recent years, propaganda has been used to sway voters to vote for a specific person or view.…
Utopia, the place that can only be imagined, where everything is perfect. No person in need nor are they sad, sinful, or unhappy. Dystopia on the other hand is a supposed place where everything is substandard, people live in inadequate conditions and everything is reprehensible. In Ayn Rand’s Anthem and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 the main characters live in places that by all accounts of todays society should be called dystopia. However the citizens do not see it as unsatisfactory they believe to be a utopia because of their upbringings and current knowledge.…
Richard Sosis is an anthropology research professor with interests in human behavioral ecology. In his article, The Adaptive Value of Religious Ritual, Sosis questions the logic and purpose of the religious acts and rituals from around the world. Sosis looks deeper into the fundamental reasons for the rituals and how it affects the selected community as a whole and its benefits of overall survival. Sosis argues that the group cooperation that is found in these religious ceremonies creates trust and commitment within these groups, and this "membership" reveals who is worthy of this trust and commitment.…
In this paper I will argue that pleasure and pain are imperative in the moral life. My main reason is that in order to live a moral life you must be morally virtuous, which involves pleasure and pain which are always paired with actions and feelings. The crucial importance of pleasure and pain and its role in the moral life are statements that are more likely to be true then false. Research Aristotle was a very influential philosopher who focused on the happiness principle and all that happiness entailed: “The Nicomachean Ethics”.…
In the following, Barack Obama´s victory speech, which was held in November 2012 after being re-elected as President of the United States of America, will be analysed. Generally, one can say that Obama sends a message of shared values and hopes by using rhetorical devices and structuring his line of arguments in a way that establishes a connection and a feeling of togetherness and involvement in his actions in the audience, for example by the usage of pronouns like “we”. Now, a closer look will be taken at the line of argument.…
