A direct representation of this is the quote, “Artists and art writers who use political motives to create and interpret art encourage the audience to make a critical response to social issues”. This article further supports the statement that art effects society by stating, “Art is to bring about social change. By highlighting examples of injustice and oppression they cause people to confront narrow-minded attitudes” (Sullivan, 1994). There is evidence of this in the artworks of Barbra Kruger whos work usually involves black-and-white photographs with overlaid captions set in white-on-red. The phrases she creates usually make a daring statement and commonly applies pronouns such as you, I, your, we and they. She juxtaposes text with imagery that contains criticism of sexism and cultural power structures and her statements question the viewer about classicism, feminism, and consumerism. (Anon, 2007).
