Who was Cecile Watson? Watson was an artist in which she practiced as a painter, sculpture, and illustrator. Her painting Romance is very eye catching and something about the painting I find really interesting. When I look at the painting there is a since of joy but maybe some tension as well. The title of this painting also catches the eye, because when you see the word Romance you are expecting the typical love paintings with a man and women. If someone were to tell me to close my eyes and then told me the name I would not expect a mother holding her child. Romance is more sexually and adult but this painting kind of flips the term romance to another dimension. “The title of the painting is ironic”(The National Galleries of Scotland), and I agree with The national Galleries of Scotland because the title makes you ponder on your definition versus the true definition of romance. In any other genre with the word “Romance”, there is a lover, but her lovers are her two sons.

During the 1900s, there were still nude paintings showing genital. The nudity seems to express ones masculinity and ones femininity. Watson seem impressed with the artwork during that time period and painted abstract work of art. Watson painted a naked women but her genital area is covered leaving her breast out. Now a days people would be shocked and some rather disturbed by a painting or picture of a naked person. During that time, when one painted a mother and a child then usually it relates to Mary and baby Jesus, but is that the same in this painting?
