The topic of genetically modified foods is one of great controversy and is surrounded by many pros and cons. At the center of this topic is how genetically modified foods or GMF’s as they are often referred to are produced and what actually is done in the process of creating these foods, and how accurate are the labels the manufactures of these genetically modified foods are when they finally reach the hands of the consumers. Many people would argue that genetically modified foods are beneficial, focusing on the argument that genetically modified foods can feed a lot of people and feed people in countries that don’t have access to foods that are rich in nutrients and the increased self-life and heartiness of these

I believe that the following issues need to be addressed and answered before these foods are accepted as a safe means of feeding the general population. The following are all valid areas of concern. First, the research on the long-term effects of genetically modified foods is limited. Second, genetically modified foods may be linked to allergies, antibiotic resistances and even cancer. The first concern can only be addressed by time and research. The second area of concern will also be answered over time but I believe that the information that has been collected to date is strong enough to support my agreement that genetically modified foods are not safe in the long term. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows the food allergies in children under the 18 years of age have increased; from 3.4% between 1997 and 1999 to 5.1% between 2009 and 2011. The process for genetically modifying foods includes changing some of the proteins. For example in the mid 1900’s researchers studied genetically modified soybeans and found the protein from brazil nuts was added to the soybeans thus causing more allergic reactions in people with nut allergies and because of the studies these soybeans

There seems to be three main arguments against genetically modified foods (GMO), they don't reproduce, we don't know if our body recognizes it, and high production cost. Even tho genetically modified foods are made to be more protected against farm pesticide and diseases; are they good for our body?. Genetically modified foods are not able to reproduce for example, once a GMO seed is planted it will not produce anymore seeds for farmers to reproduce more fruits. farmers are forced to go buy more GMO seeds, so economically farmers are loosing money faster then there making it.…

Usually the FDA regulates all food but for GMOs they haven’t tested the long term safety of them. The FDA knows of “genetic instability” yet have no testing for genetically engineered food. FDA scientists have mentioned long term testing because there is no stability but it didn’t come through. There has been evidence and their own scientists have tried to convince them. The FDA physician who regulates input says, “FDA hasn’t found it necessary to conduct comprehensive scientific reviews of foods derived from bioengineered plants [but instead] expects developers to consult the agency on safety and regulatory questions.…

Although genetically modified organisms were only introduced in 1996, the side effects have already been seen: there have been more allergic reactions, antibiotic resistant bacteria, etc. While these side effects of genetically modified organisms may seem small in the much larger picture, the long-term consequences can be much worse. More children are developing life-threatening allergies, which can be contributed to more genetically modified organism intake. Already 37 people have died from side effects of genetically modified organisms, 1,500 partially paralyzed and 5,000 were temporarily handicapped by chemicals used in harvesting genetically modified organisms (Smith, “Genetic Roulette” 258). This doesn’t even include the number of kids that have been born with birth defects connected with the chemical glyphosate.…

However, along with the use of genetically engineered crops follows controversy. Genetically modified foods, or GM’s, have a big support group but also an equally as big opposition. The use of genetically modified foods in the global supply should be limited to need based situations and only after more than enough testing to ensure that the food is safe enough for consumption.
