Throughout the world, foods are being genetically modified to improve production, lower price, and make the food more resistant to insects ( Agadoni). However, along with the use of genetically engineered crops follows controversy. Genetically modified foods, or GM’s, have a big support group but also an equally as big opposition. The use of genetically modified foods in the global supply should be limited to need based situations and only after more than enough testing to ensure that the food is safe enough for consumption.
One of the biggest controversies regarding genetically modified foods is the safety of them. Source D informs readers that there are potential impacts on human health such as allergens, and antibiotic resistance markers along with potential environmental impacts of possible cross-pollination, or loss of flora/fauna biodiversity. In South Africa, the UN stepped in to provide tons of food as aid to the starving population. However a number of the countries declined to taking the GM grains. “Citing health and environmental concerns, Zimbabwe blocked the Gm food aid from entering the country” (Manda). In countries such as the United States, labeling genetically modified foods is not mandatory. This can pose an issue with people who do not want to consume GM foods. With labeling not being necessary, a person could potentially eat GM foods without even knowing which could tie right back into the safety concerns of the last point. If a person consumes genetically modified food without knowing it ( because there was no label required), there is a potential for an allergic reaction with something used to modify the food that the consumer was unaware was
