Patients who are able, show their auditory or visual hallucinations, express feelings which are difficult for them to do verbally. It provides for safe release of strong emotions such as rage and has prevented them from hurting themselves, others or property. Many times their art work showed they may not be ready to be released due to their images or may need closer supervision. It would be a great dis-service to patients if this study influenced a cut-back in art therapy services for a population which benefits so much from…
Miami-Dade County was one of the first and most successful school districts in Miami to develop an art therapy program. The Pilot Program combined art education and art therapy with increased federal funding for special education services in public schools. The success of the program provided additional art therapists with specialized staff development for the art teachers, while eliminating the art education classroom component. The art therapist’s role then involved assessments, interventions, consultations, professional development, research and department support. There was also additional emphasis on the interaction with parents, school psychologists, family therapists, social workers, and other teachers.…
Studies show that art therapy is effective in treating trauma (Naff, 2014). For decades, art therapy has also been incorporated into substance abuse treatment (Moore, 1983). Research findings suggest art therapy can be instrumental for addressing problems with addiction (Horay, 2006), such as reducing denial (Cox & Price, 1990), increasing self-expression (Moore, 1983), and reducing shame (Johnson, 1990). Art therapy can also help motivate clients to change (Holt & Kaiser, 2009) by moving them into a state of action (Matto, Corcoran, & Fassler, 2003). Furthermore, mental health problems may originate from experiences that happened before the child could talk.…
I used to think that physical therapy was merely a method of treatment for people with sports related injuries, but after five years of exposure to the practice, I realized my perception was narrow. President John F. Kennedy said "children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future. " I read this statement a few years ago, on a YMCA brochure. Although, President Kennedy said this during the UNICEF Appeal in 1963, these words carry more significance because it created a connection between my current understanding of the physical therapy profession and the possibilities of what it can be. The APTA’s new vision for physical therapy is to expand beyond just caring for those with injuries.…
Expressive arts therapy is approached from a variety of therapeutic orientations, but essential to the discipline is emphasizing the expressive content of creative material over artistic achievement or technical mastery (Levine & Levine 115). Influential art therapist Judith Rubin…

Many, like myself before I read this article, do not think of art as a therapeutic modality or treatment. It is captivating the way therapist are able to use art as a way to understand a person and allow patients to release their stress and emotions through different art mediums. It goes to show that there are numerous techniques apart from what a doctor or physician prescribe that can help individuals reach a health and sanity. The main reason why I choose this article is because I personally like how art therapy offers patients a way to better their state of health without necessarily taking medication; rather, it gives people an opportunity to be creative and gain new…
When I was accepted to San Jose State University (SJSU) I intended to pursue a career in art therapy with a focus in child development. I always had an aptitude for art and I wanted to incorporate that into a career that allowed me to help people. I took classes, such as Child Psychology, Psychology of the Adolescent, Chad, Multicultural Art/Children, etc., in order to pursue a career in that field. Additionally, I began working at elementary schools, such as Carden Day School, Monroe Middle School, Sherman Oaks, etc., in order to gain some experience working with youth.…

Art-based Therapy To decrease the rate of 28 day re-admissions in the Cramond Clinic (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) from 13.7% to 5% within twelve months using an arts-based program. To encompass a clinical governance framework for this project, all pillars extenuating the significance of accountability for improving consumer safety, quality and effectiveness within a health service will be discussed with relevance to the implications of an art-based therapy intervention (ACSQHC 2010; ANMC 2016). Effective clinical performance and evaluation will be demonstrated through the implementation, documentation, monitoring and review of best evidence-based art therapy practices in a safe and quality manner (Department of Health & Human Services 2013).…
Throughout the entire time, we as humans have always been affected by some sort of trauma. Whether it is a minor injury or something that required extreme medical attention, time hasn’t changed for our demand to become as healthy as possible. However, what has changed in the past is what methods we use in order to treat ourselves. Of course, we could go the more traditional method of today and go see a doctor, but not everyone has a doctor to meet with. So, to combat that, why not use something as simple as physical therapy.…
Everyone has their own definition of art. It is hard to give a really specific definition to art. As an individual person, we all have our own opinion about art. Therefore, in this paper, I am going to discuss what is art and what is not art, how are different arts be meaningful and useful in my own life or career and what makes art objects meaningful to us. And how can we decide an artwork is meaningful or not then why does art matter.…
Face it, Art is Art To be considered an artist is debatable. If one can be considered an artist, and if their work should even be considered as art, is argued constantly, but the truth is, no one can define an artist as one solid definition. The exact definition of art is considered: a wide variety of possessions and effects a person can show, create or capture. So, when it comes to photography, it shouldn 't be questionable if the photos themselves are art or not.…
“For very young children, making art -- or just talking about it- provides opportunities to learn words for colors, shapes, and actions” (Lynch). It is vital for a child to learn the importance of art early in their life so that they can choose whether or not they will be dedicated to pursue a career involving art skills. Learning about these basic forms of art at an early age gives children more insight in preparation for their educational life. “Although some may regard art education as a luxury, simple creative activities are some of the building blocks of child development” (Lynch). Students involved in simple creative activities within their peers can affect their emotional status and gives a more comforting feeling being around others that have similar qualities of enjoyment.…
