One element is the boat by Mr. McLaverty, which is built to overcome and counteract the flood that is also oddly biblical. The water that is usually considered a symbol that is a source of powerful cleansing properties, now only creates death and decay through catharsis. In the story of Noah’s Ark, the water purifies, and destroys the sinners. But in this story, it is the opposite way around, as the water takes the life of children and innocent people, and the sinner survives. The Exodus, which was mentioned in the old testament of the bible, is also mentioned in the text: “By April, most Londoners had left in mass exoduses, but some still sat tight in the districts above the water level (…)” (p. 1, ll. 10-12). In the old testament, it was the departure of the Israelites from Egypt under Moses after the ten plagues of God. In the short story, it may be the Londoners escape before the plague of
