It is shocking to think that one in every ten americans take some form of antidepressant.
Depression is a real disease and without antidepressants the suicide and homicide rate will drastically increase. Antidepressants are used to help people handle depression which can become a very serious problem if it is not properly cared for. When someone is suffering from this disease, antidepressants can make a huge difference in helping them cope with day to day life. These medicines are supposed to help balance the chemicals in a person’s brain when they are lacking the chemical that is creating the depression. If someone is lacking the necessary amount of serotonin needed, they can start having serious health conditions. The person will experience sleeplessness, have possible panic attacks, and depression. If the person is unable to sleep their body will not rest and will therefore cause heart problems. If a person experiences panic attacks the stress of the attack will also affect the heart. The heart will in turn cause the kidneys to malfunction causing weight retention which will contribute to even more health issues. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are used in an attempt to adjust the low levels of this chemical. According to Healthline, “These drugs fight depression symptoms by decreasing serotonin reuptake in the brain. This effect leaves more serotonin available to work in your brain.” (Cherney pt. 2.) Serotonin is important because it is a neurotransmitter and low levels can create mood disorders like depression. These medicines are made to prevent the brain from reabsorbing these chemicals and allowing the brain to use them as intended.

In conclusion, depression is a very serious disease that affects far more people than anyone thinks. It has become one of the world’s most common diseases and needs to be raised to more public awareness. Scientists have worked to improve them in many ways and continue to do so. Antidepressants have such a negative stigma around them that most people who need them
