Depression is marketed as a biological illness. Biotechnical treatments in the form of antidepressants, are sold to consumers as an appropriate remedy to the issue. Scientific literature encourages consumers to self-scrutinize common behavioural and mood distresses, and treat them with the appropriate remedy. Antidepressant medications and psychotherapy are two treatment choices for depression. Consumer awareness concerning antidepressant medications is established through pharmaceutical marketing, specifically through direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA). DTCA is a form of marketing promotion that is aimed towards providing awareness of pharmaceutical drugs for patients and consumers, rather than healthcare professionals. Pscychotherapy is the treatment of mental disorders by psychological means, rather than medical means. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that works to treat problems through examining the relationships between thorough, feelings and behaviours. …show more content…
This will be established through an analysis of the issues surrounding the classification of depression as an illness, and its subsequent pharmaceutical treatment with the marketing of antidepressant medication. The aggressive marketing techniques of the pharmaceutical industry, such as direct-to-consumer advertising, reduces the democratic discourse that offers consumers the possibility to make fully informed choices based on all of the currently conducted research. The depression script reiterates that mental illness’ is a problem that needs to be solved, through pharmaceutical solution.
