A Chemical That Works Against Life

Antibiotics (sometimes called antibacterials) are a strong group of medicines that are used to treat infections caused by bacteria and certain parasites. The term antibiotics comes from the Greek terms “anti” (which means “against”) and “bios” (which means “life”) While our scientific knowledge of antibiotics has only recently been developed, the practical application of antibiotics has existed for centuries. Many ancient cultures, including the ancient Egyptians and ancient Greeks, used specially selected mold, plants and extracts to treat infections. The first known use was by the Chinese about 2,500 years ago, where they discovered that applying the moldy curd of soybeans to infections

This is done to improve the efficiency of the natural product, reduce its potential side effects, prevent developing resistance by the targeted bacteria and/or expand the range of bacteria that it can treat.

Antibiotics can be used in various ways. Antibiotics are commonly taken orally, though intravenous administration might be used in more serious cases. Antibiotics may also sometimes be administered topically (outside of the body), such as when used with eye drops or skin ointments. Today, over 10,000 different types of antibiotic substances have been reported. A list of the main types of antibiotics include: penicillins (penicillin V, flucloxacillin, amoxicillin); cephalosporins (cefaclor, cefadroxil, cefalexin); tetracyclines (tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline); aminoglycosides (gentamicin, amikacin, tobramycin); macrolides (erythromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin); clindamycin; sulfonamides and trimethoprim (co-trimoxazole); quinolones (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, norfloxacin); metronidazole and tinidazole. Along with the main types of antibiotics, there are a number of other antibiotics that specialist or hospital doctors may prescribe for more uncommon infections such as

Terrestrial plants have been used as medicines in Egypt, China, India and Greece from ancient times and an impressive number of modern drugs have been developed from them. A large archaeological evidence exists which indicates that humans were using medicinal plants during the Paleolithic, approximately 60,000 years ago. Some animals such as non-human primates, monarch butterflies and sheep are also known to ingest medicinal plants to treat illness. The first written records on the medicinal uses of plants appeared in about 2600 BC from the Sumerians and Akkaidians. The Ebers Papyrus, the best known Egyptian pharmaceutical record which documented over 700 drugs, represents the history of Egyptian medicine dated from 1500 BC.…

Ampicillin is an antibiotic used to prevent and treat a number of bacteria infections, first developed and sold in 1961. Trmethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX), also known as co-trimoxazole among other names, is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacteria infections, first developed in 1984. In conclusion, this information has helped me form my hypothesis that bacteria contain plasmids which sometimes contain the genes of antibiotic resistance, which can help bacteria survive and have offspring that are fully immune to certain antibiotics. Rather or not a bacteria becomes resistance to antibiotics can vary on two major factors: time and use. I predict that sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim will prove to be greater in effect and will eliminate more bacteria than ampicillin, because of development and usage…

This bacteria use several mechanisms to keep its self survive in the present of the antibiotics, For example, multiple mutations can couse high level of resistances [10]. Another reason is A. baumannii can be resistant to some of the antibiotics such as tigecycline [11]. Also, efflus pump system play major role in the multidrug resistance of A. baumannii…

Impact of penicillin, novobiocin, and kanamycin on Staphylococcus aureus bacterial growth Introduction: In today’s world, bacteria are becoming more abundant and strong in terms of their resistance to antibiotics. As a result of increasing prescription potency, clinicians are supposed to be conscious of those patients who are more inclined to infection by prescribing the appropriate antibiotics on the basis of their sensitivities along with their cultures (Fleming et al., 2006). A recent case study by Fleming and his colleagues showed the presence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas (MRSA), a strain of Staphylococcus aureas that has relatively strong antibiotic resistance as a result of natural selection. Accordingly, they found…

People with more severe cases of bacterial pneumonia may be treated with oxygen, intravenous fluids, and breathing treatments to ease symptoms. Although antibiotics are the more preferable form of treatment they are not the only regimen used in the treatment of pneumonia. Depending on the type of pneumonia, in specific the viral forms of pneumonia, antiviral medicines may also be beneficial, only if they’re used immediately and in proper doses though. In the same sense antifungal agents may also be used to treat fungal pneumonia. These fungal pneumonias can be diagnosed with a blood test which will show your body trying to make antibodies to treat the fungus.…

Even still there are some persistent and/or recurrent infections that require broad spectrum antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones. The premise of the article focuses on FMT to treat C. difficile infections after multiple failures on conventional treatments. To fully understand FMT it was important for me to have a complete understanding of the infection it treats. Clostridium difficile is bacteria that can cause symptoms from mild to moderate diarrhea, to a more severe and life-threatening inflammation of the colon called colitis. Persistent infections can result in malabsorption of nutrients from the colon which leads to dehydration, weight loss, and malnutrition due to sever inflammation of the colon.…
