When I am dreaming, I sometimes am not sure if I am awake or dreaming, but when I am awake I know I am not dreaming. In dreams, I feel like I am not in control of what is happening, I am the observer. I sometimes know I am dreaming because I do things I would not normally do in real life. In dreams, things do not always make sense, like a movie skipping. In real life, this is not the case.…
John Updike’s story unfolded at an occasion, and he wrote as if the poem itself were a speech or a eulogy that was given in public. In contrast, Edgar Allan Poe’s “A Dream Within a Dream,” takes place at a gloomy beach. In Updike’s case, he was honoring and commemorating, because funerals are meant to remember and rejoice people, creating an interestingly optimistic feel. Where Poe tells his story, he is not at a place where one would say anything because they had to. Poe creates a more personal feel for his poem, making the setting more intimate because solitary time at the beach most likely means the visitor is reflecting, and wishes to be left alone.…

After viewing the State of Consciousness section on "Dreams," the experiences I have had with dreams are more understandable now. For example, since I play fantasy football, I have had dreams in which I stressed over losing on fantasy football due to severe injuries for the players on my team or simply just mismanagement. Most importantly, these dreams typically occurred in Sunday night and several days afterwards, when football was still fresh in my mind. These dreams do make sense now as they are explained through the neurocognitive dream theory, which states that dreams share a lot with our thoughts and emotions (Domhoff, 2003. 2001). As I was worried about these games, especially in times when the football games were occurring, it is reasonable…
In the film Inception, the question that is raised is, is Dominic Cobb dreaming or is he awake. After watching the film multiple times, the answer is never really clear. You just have to pick a side, and believe what you would like. Throughout the film, we are deceived by the totem, the children, the overpowering subconscious, the jumping around of the movie, the fighting that is always happening, and Mal, which leads us to believe that Dominic is still dreaming.…
Every day for which we have lived has begun in the exact same fashion. We woke up. The experience for us is often very similar day to day but most often with a change or two. The sun is shining and there is a clear blue sky or maybe there is rain today, overcast. Maybe you woke up and ate eggs or you were out and had cereal.…
UNSPOKEN WORDS: Unspoken words by Paul Callus, is a poem that can be interpreted in many ways depending on who's reading it. In my case, I took the poem as having to do with lost opportunities and things that I never got the chance to say. In the past I've bottled up my feelings, and now all I’m left with is regret on things that I hadn’t done. I have a feeling that the guy in the poem, if he doesn't take a chance to say how he feels, he’ll be in the same boat as me, with a million questions but not a single answer.…
He dug himself out of his depression with the help of his wife, but unfortunately spiraled back down after her sudden death. To illustrate the darkness of his works, he is known as the Father of Poetic Horror, though the title is not needed, because his works are a true testament to that. He uses repetition and rhythm to state a point, while showing true emotion in his work. He uses rhyme in many of his works to show his feelings and positions on the topics he speaks about. Lastly he uses dark Irony, sometimes to antagonize people in his poems, and sometimes, to show his hatred and ill will towards characters, who in his mind transition into the real world.…
Dreams can sometimes feel so real and when they do; boy, it can be very scary. A few nights ago I was having a really bad dream - a nightmare you could say. I don't remember exactly what was happening in the dream but what I do recall is being aware that I was dreaming. That alone was very strange because I've never had a dream where I knew it wasn't real while it was happening. My dreams have always felt very real and I’ve always been helplessly trying to figure out an escape.…
Among seven theories, there was a theory claiming that we dream to heal. In this theory, they said dreaming is important in that it inables us to solve the problem with the state of lower stress level. And they also said some doctors are trying to find the reason of mental disorders based on these theory. However, i don't think it' reasonable. I rarely dream while i sleep.…
What is a dream? The scientific definition of a dream is when there is a very small amount of brain activity and there is no sense of self-awareness. Dream, an imaginary vision that leads a person to insanity. Dream, a well-sealed prison of thoughts that no one can escape from, and we all are prisoners of our thoughts; it is like a rusted chain, it is going off and on, and off again. There shall be no more, for the sake of my sanity, I will keep dreaming as long as there is hope. A light that leads a disparate person from the darkest of nights to the shining sun of a new dawn, a new era of achieving what we wanted. Dreams are colorful and different; it reminds us of ourselves, who we are and what we want from this life is it happiness or the sweet relief of death?…
First, I am going to start out with the definition of Psychology. Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions. Speaking of the human mind and its functions, dreams, what are they? Dreams are a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep. Dreams are very mysterious, they are the “royal road to… the unconscious,” a famed psychologist once said (Sigmund Freud).…
