Personal Narrative: When I Am Dreaming

Improved Essays
When I am dreaming, I sometimes am not sure if I am awake or dreaming, but when I am awake I know I am not dreaming. In dreams, I feel like I am not in control of what is happening, I am the observer. I sometimes know I am dreaming because I do things I would not normally do in real life. In dreams, things do not always make sense, like a movie skipping. In real life, this is not the case. I find it hard to sometimes distinguish if I am dreaming or if it is really happening, but I know when I am awake because I am in control of my actions and because the events taking place make sense. I have a hard time remembering any of my dreams, but I have a very good memory of what has happened in my life, but actually remembering my dreams is hard. This

However, there are multiple ‘reality checks’ a person could perform to test which state they are in. For example, a simple reality check would be to try and do something that is practically impossible in reality that would not cause harm to the person, such as trying to push your fingers through your palm or even attempting to float off of the ground. Another reliable reality check a person could perform would be to read text or numbers. If the text or numbers change while a person is reading them or when they reread them, then it is highly likely that that person is dreaming. This is a highly reliable reality check because “text in dreams changes 75% of the time it is re-read once and changes 95% it is re-read twice”, according to the Lucidity Institute.…

Sometimes, I wake up surprised that the dream was not reality when the dream consisted of normal things that can happen in reality. Another difference I see between dreams and reality is that I act differently in the two worlds. When I am in a dream, I feel like I am missing a part of my brain and lost some of my knowledge that I have from reality. In one dream, I was taking a test on multiplication and I completely forgot how to do it, so I ended up failing the test, but I had the memory from reality while taking the test that I learned how to do it when I was in the third…

And because of this, there is no definite way to distinguish between each of the perceptions. Many other philosophers have studied this premise, including John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. Thomas Hobbes believes that the biggest key to distinguishing a dream from waking consciousness is the “absurdity”. “An absence of absurdity in waking life”, describes how one may realize a perception is a dream through a perception that is extremely abnormal, where he or she is positive that is not occurring in real life (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). For example, if one dreamt of talking to and spending time with a dead relative, he/she knows that is impossible, or in Hobbes’ mind, is “absurd” and therefore distinguishing the difference between dreaming and being awake.…

I had been dreaming of this moment nearly my entire life. Movies, T.V., even books, displayed this astounding city I ventured in, almost as if it were a sacred land. Being raised in the Deep South with nothing but wilderness, rusty pick-up trucks, and small, run-down towns, convinced me that a city as enchanting as Manhattan could possibly exist. Yet, here I am in Newark, New Jersey, boarding a train to Grand Central Station, about to meet my future stepmom 's sister, Bekah. I had been on an airplane many times, but never a train.…
