The beginning of the 1940’s was a terrible time to be a Jew. There was Adolf Hitler leading Germans into Amsterdam,trapping the jews taking them from their homes and forcefully bringing them back to concentration camps. The book “Annexed” takes place in an Annex, which is basically an another living space to the main structure. The main character, Peter Van Pels, is in hiding from the Germans with his mother and father, Anne Frank and her family, and the dentist, Dr. Pfeffer. Their job is to hide from the the Germans and to survive in the hidden Annex as long as they can without getting caught by the germans. But Peter and the annex family can’t grasp what is going on since the whole life is being changed right in front in their eyes. “We are shocked. We are scared. We are so tired and thirsty we cannot think… We have seen that they’ll kill us if we do not do whatever they want, and quickly. We glance at each other before we let go of each other’s hands like obedient children” (285). Peter Van Pels even said it himself, “obedient children”. That is how the Germans made them feel. Constantly listening to orders and having to follow them them to live. There isn't any rights that the Jews have at least that's how Hitler sees it.Also why they wouldn't fight back because they knew in their minds they have a zero percent chance of getting out alive. That shows how Germans abused Jews. Just by invading families house and living spaces taking all they have and the people themselves as prisoners.
Another way how the German soldiers abused jewish people was the awful living conditions they left them in. The journey to one of the multiple concentration camps, the Jewish people most definitely have a fun train ride to the camps. “I am on a train. I do not know where we are going” (279). “Suddenly there is no light--or just a sliver of it, like a half-memory, high up in the carriage” (279).
