What makes animals different to humans internally? All animals have a heart and so do humans, animals have a brain and so do humans then, why don’t animals have the same rights as humans?
Animal rights is defined as rights believed to belong to animals to live free from humans using animals for their own benefit. I believe animal rights is also how the animal should be treated. Animal welfare is how well the animals should be treated. Michael C. Appleby explains animal welfare as, “Ethical concern over the quality of life of animals” (19). If one believes in animal welfare then does one believe in animal rights also? Animals get mistreated in different settings whether circuses, zoos or factories. According to the “Animal Rights Debate” Rich Wagner claims, “53 billion animals are killed each year, not counting fish caught in the ocean.” These animals can range from domestic animals like dogs and cats or wild animals like monkeys and orcas.
Whenever you see an animal at the zoo or in a circus do you wonder how they are treated? Well, these entertainment animals are held up in cages, and are usually not treated as properly as they should be. The animals usually get beaten in order to perform a routine for what, our amusement, and our pleasure. “Any effort to prevent suffering will call for rights of a certain sort” (Nussbaum 5).
