The Unnoticed Heroes
A sprained ankle, it’s no big deal. However, as the days go on the ankle starts to hurt more and more.The first place to go is the family doctor. They say it might be serious and now it’s time to go to a different set of doctors. The doctors take some scans and they show that the bones in the ankle are broken and surgery is necessary. Surgeons are nice and all, but they’re still cutting into the body and that hurts a lot. Fear not though, for there are really special doctors to make sure patients feel no pain during surgery; they’re the unnoticed heroes, they are anesthesiologists.
An anesthesiologist is a person who specializes in the pre operative care of patients and the use of anesthesia. In order to become an anesthesiologist, one has to go through extensive schooling. Then there are three more years of residency. Throughout these four years one is practicing and learning under other anesthesiologists. After the three years of residency are completed, one begins their fellowship as an anesthesiologist. “Most anesthesiology residents go on to do a one to two-year fellowship program to learn a subspecialty,” (Bratcher, Emily). An anesthesiologists education is very extensive, but they use it every day on the job. An anesthesiologist is a person who specializes in the pre operative care and the use of anesthesia. This allows them to momentarily dull a patient’s sensation of pain to allow them to undergo typically painful operations. If not for anesthesiologists, people would not be able to undergo many, if not all, surgeries to the high amount of pain the patient suffers.
