During the 19th Century the presidents of the United States had accomplished many things during their term. Thomas Jefferson established and bought the Louisiana Purchase. He also sent Lewis and Clark to explore the world to see what they could find. President James Madison led his nation into the War of 1812 against Britain and its Canadian allies. In his December 2, 1823, address to Congress, President James Monroe articulated United States’ policy on the new political order developing in the rest of the Americas and the role of Europe in the Western Hemisphere. Andrew Jackson and his policies strengthened the new American nationalism. Through his actions during his presidency, he changed the nation into a more nationalistic country. While being president the Trail of Tears was also created. President James Polk was trying to get Mexico to negotiate with the United States and was willing to create the Mexican-American War to do this. On Dec. 5, 1848, President James K. Polk confirmed in his State of the Union address that large quantities of gold had been discovered in California.
