Andrelton Simmons Research Paper

Andrelton Simmons Every child that has been interested America’s pastime has heard of all the baseball greats. We have all heard about Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, Babe Ruth and the list goes on. All these players were great, but not a single one of them could come remotely close to what the Angels shortstop, Andrelton Simmons, does on a daily basis. Andrelton Simmons is not only the best shortstop in the league, but he is the best player in the MLB. Andrelton Simmons made his major league debut in 2012 with the Atlanta Braves. Simmons was originally drafted as a pitcher, but told his coaches he would only sign with the team if they let him try shortstop first. Simmons shocked everyone with how well he played in the minor leagues, which quickly …show more content…
Andrelton Simmons’ arm strength is what allows him to play a couple steps deeper in the hole than other shortstops. Because of this depth, his arm strength allows Simmons gets to balls in the gap that no one else in the world would even attempt at. The show isn’t over when he gets to the ball. When Simmons gets to the ball he unleashes the cannon, throwing the ball on a line over 95 mph right to the first baseman’s chest. The accuracy of the throws is remarkable. Simmons makes the Derek Jeter jump throw, but with ease. Simmons dives to the left, right, over his shoulder and makes every play. On a ground ball up the middle, Simmons gets to the ball, flips it behind his back to his throwing arm, and delivers a strike to first base. This play shows his amazing coordination and unbelievable skill. Great plays aren’t the only things he makes. Routine plays are botched by every player, but less for some; or in Andrelton Simmons case, much less. Simmons fielding percentage was .988 last season. That means 98.8 percent of all the balls Simmons got to, he made the play. Even with the increased area he covers, and crazy number of unbelievable plays he attempts, he manages to not throw away or bobble the ball. Simmons’ remarkable plays constantly end him up on sports science, which shows the science behind his plays, and how nearly impossible they are to make. He impresses not only fans, but even …show more content…
These players are good, however, they are not the best. These players get the fame for hitting 400 foot home runs because a lot of viewers love watching the ball fly. Fans enjoy the high scoring, back and forth games. This is why the others get the fame and acknowledgement, but not one of them has the skillset of Andrelton Simmons. We have seen Simmons hit the occasional 400 foot home run before, but when have we ever seen Bryce Harper make a diving play in the hole, get up and throw a 95MPH+ fastball across the diamond to get a speedy baserunner? We have also seen Andrelton Simmons steal bases with ease, but have we ever seen Lorenzo Cain slip while fielding but still manage to throw the ball from his rear 75MPH to nab the runner trying to beat a hit out? Simmons can do what these guys are known for, but not a single one of these other players could do what Andrelton Simmons
