1. "Now the woman was old. And she had a daughter who grew up speaking only english and swallowing more Coca-Cola than sorrow. For a long time now the woman had wanted to give her daughter the single swan feathers and tell her, 'This feather may look worthless, but it comes from afar and carries with it all my good intentions. ' And she waited, year after year, for the day she could tell her daughter this in perfect American English."-Introduction

The author prefaces the book with this passage in order to express the main theme of the book, cultural and language barriers. The swan symbolizes "The woman’s" hopes and dreams of coming to America but after she is left with nothing but a feather shows how little she was able to hold onto from china. The woman wants to tell her American daughter about the feather which holds tremendous meaning even though she might find it to be worthless because she doesn 't understand chinese culture, but because she cannot speak english, she must wait.

2.”What will I say? What can I tell them about my mother? I don’t know anything….” The aunties are looking at me as if I had become crazy right before their eyes…. And then it occurs to me. They are frightened. In me, they see their own daughters, just as ignorant.... They see daughters who grow impatient when their mothers talk in Chinese…. who will bear grandchildren born without any connecting hope passed from generation to generation.”(40)
