Racism is one of the most common forms of prejudice and can be seen throughout all societies. It is developed from the ideologies and practices that seek to justify, or cause, the unequal distribution of privileges, rights or goods among different racial groups. People can see it expressed in books, newspapers and other forms of media and entertainment, it has even become apart of today’s technology through things like cyber bullying. Many people in powerful and authoritative positions have also felt this way towards people of a different race stating that it's just “human nature” and that's it's “hardwired into the human brain”. Racism can be then furthered to a more extreme, deep-rooted, irrational hatred towards foreigners or people perceived as a danger towards their identity and purity. This is called xenophobia.
Many people understand what racism is, but don’t apply it to themselves and do not notice when it is operating in their community. People no longer take the time to get to know a person properly and so they are quick to judge people, especially those of different ethnic backgrounds that more often than not based on generalizations and stereotypes.
