The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith and Murder on the Ballarat Train by Kate Dennis are extremely different kinds of Detective Fiction and therefore contain some key differences. In McCall Smith’s text, the crimes are not as significant compared to those in Dennis’. Also, in Smith’s text, the criminals are not as worthy as those found in Dennis’. Both texts have very memorable detectives for different reasons. These texts are definitely on opposite ends of the detective fiction spectrum when comparing the elements of basic detective fiction but do include some similarities.

Both detectives are equally memorable for their own reasons. Mma Ramotswe from Smith’s text, was memorable for being an African woman who is fat, as she herself said; “A detective agency, right here in Gaborone, with me, the fat lady detective”. Also, for the bulk of the text, she shows her independence through her work, as she works mostly alone. Her dislike of Marriage is also a great example of her independence in not only work but life also. She explains her reasoning for her dislike; “I had a husband once… he made me unhappy and now I am glad I no longer have that husband”. Maybe the most memorable part about Mma Ramotswe is that she is the first ever and only ladies detective agency in Botswana. In Dennis’ text, the detective is memorable for her ability to put clues together in a way that no one else could, including all of the police officers and investigators in the story. She had great confidence in her detective ability. She is also memorable for her kindness and attractiveness. In both texts, the detective is memorable but the reasons for this varied between each
