The author of “Of Mice and Men”, John Steinbeck, was born in Salinas, California. He enjoyed a comfortable childhood and youth even though his family experienced many setbacks. At a young age, he showed a strong interest in reading and writing. Many events that occurred in his life provided him something to write about, the stock market crashed, banks failed, and the Great Depression was beginning. The novella is about two migrant workers, George and Lennie, who start a new job and have the dream of owning a farm. This was the time that the Great Depression swept through the nation, as well as the Dust Bowl in the midwest. The first example that supports my thesis is Crook’s memory of his father’s chicken ranch. While others like George, Lennie, and Candy look to the future for their dream, Crooks looks into his past, remembering the happiness he had as a small boy. Crooks explains to Lennie that the “‘white kids came to play at our place, an’ sometimes i went to play with them, and sometimes them were pretty nice’” (Steinbeck 46). In this quote Crooks hints the reader to what his dream is.…

The farm in George’s dream could be said to the “paradise” and when George kills Lennie in the end, it represents the loss of Adam and Eve when they got kicked out of Eden. Lennie’s imperfection and his desire to feel the soft things put him in a situation where he loses his temper and ends up killing a human. As a result, he loses his dream of a farm and tending rabbits. Similarly to the Eve, who brings sin and death, Curly’s wife tempts the men at ranch, and she is also the cause of Lennie’s demise. The beauty of brush and river also symbolizes the beauty of the…

Steinbeck uses many literary techniques in the novella ‘Of Mice and Men’. An example of a commonly used technique is the use of foreshadowing where he uses different scenes to hint or create an idea of a character's involvement in the future of the story. One character that Steinbeck constantly foreshadows is Lennie Small who is a tall, childlike man with an intellectual disability. He creates different scenes to paint a picture of Lennie’s future and the troubles to come. Using these three scenes from the novella Steinbeck creates an idea in the reader’s mind, on what the future of this character might be.…
