In The House of Many Eyes Tom has lots of internal dialog, which allow the readers the ability to think and feel like Tom. Grove gives the readers an insight of how Tom is feeling with this internal dialog Tom thinks “As if it were my fault! As if I had made myself a cripple on purpose (75)!” Then when Tom actually gets to say something to his wife, he holds back from what he wants to say and says, “Eh!” which shows that Tom is holding back so that he can hold onto the last piece of masculinity that he has in their relationship. In Groves HOME he wants the readers to feel exactly what the characters are feeling. The frustration that the characters have in this story is particularly evident and these feelings are easily transferred to the reader. Where as in Traill’s The Bereavement, the readers are not experiencing these strong connections with the main characters, because there is so much description of the outdoors is distracting the readers from the emotions of the main character. Even though The Bereavement gives the shock factor at the end the readers never have an emotional connection with the main character so they never will understand how the main character is
