I chose the article “Why Employee Morale Matters—Especially Now” by Lynn Cowart which appeared in the spring 2014 issue of The Public Manager. The article focuses on government employee disengagement at work, which may ultimately result in job turnover, and offers suggestions for managers and supervisors to improve employee engagement to keep their productivity high (Cowart, 2014). Though this article concentrates on government employees, I believe the information presented is relevant to all employees, whether they be in the public or private sector. Employee engagement is vital to an organization’s success, and as we discussed in class, replacing an employee costs an organization 1 to 3 times the position’s annual salary. It is therefore in an organization’s best interest to retain current employees and ensure they are engaged and productive.

This is something I definitely will work on to build staff morale, but this article showed me that I am doing other things right. I supervise one full-time staff member and five student employees at the Education Library of Western Michigan University, and many of the suggestions and information presented in the article are relevant to me and are already part of my supervisory routine. I work directly with my employees on a daily basis so I feel I am able to build relationships with each of them, and we are able to interact on a familiar and comfortable level daily. Because of our relationship, those I supervise are very willing to communicate concerns and issues to me, which allows me to address them immediately. By doing this, my employees can see that I care about their satisfaction, which in turn makes them productive and engaged
