Dirty Face by Shel Silverstein is about the things that have made this certain child have a dirty face. The child goes into listing crazy situations that they claim to have done. The possible reason as to why the adult asks how the child got their face so dirty is because they want to reflect on what it was like to be a child and not have the responsibilities of an adult. As a child, you do what you please, even if it may result in being dirty. On the other hand, an adult has a more structured lifestyle and might not find the same delight that a child obtains in the simple things.
