What Is The Grandmother's Role In The 1940s

Improved Essays
The Southern part of the United States is all about its “hospitality” and religion. It was typical for a man to be in charge of the household, while the ladies did the housework and took care of the children. This was especially true in the 1940s. In Flannery O 'Connor 's “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” he shows how the role is switched around. The grandmother tries to overrule the man of the family many times. Was this because she just wanted to be in charge, or was it to put the man in his place under her? There are places in the story where it is clear the grandmother is the most respected in the family. The audience can also see the grandmother is a master manipulator in how she treats the misfit. One reader can conclude an assumption that the …show more content…
The 1940s was a time where the man was the one making the decisions and the women were the followers. Moreover, it is clear that the grandmother was the leader above anyone else in the family. One may suppose that this leadership could have led to many things resulting in the death of the family. If the grandmother would have listened to Bailey, there would not have been a cat to cause a wreck. If they did not attempt to stop at a plantation that was not even in that state, they would have still been on the road. If the grandmother did not step up to call out the misfit, then the family could have had a better chance of living. While this might be true, the grandmother might also be seen as innocent. One might believe the grandmother meant no harm to anyone. The grandmother could have grown up being the only child, or may not have had a good father who showed leadership in the household. To end with, no one really knows why the grandmother was the way she was or what made her the leader she was. She may not have ever really noticed, but the result was the family being murdered in the woods by the misfit and his

Submissive is defined as; “inclined or ready to submit or yield to the authority of another.” (Dictionary.com) This word could be used to describe the father Bailey in the short story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor. Some could argue that the lack of dominance Bailey displayed eventually led up to the murdering of his entire family. A few examples that help display Bailey’s lack of dominance are: how he lets his mother walk all over him, how his children are defiant and disrespectful, and how Bailey didn’t try to fight for his family after it was known what the intentions of the Misfit were.…

This article has almost everything I need to support the idea of the grandmother’s selfishness and personality, from the way she pleaded for her life to the reasons why she used those exact pleads. The article even points out that she was like this from the beginning when she wanted to go to Tennessee and tried to convince Bailey to go. As for the Misfit, this article has some support for his character. One example for the Misfit would be his lack of any faith or emotion in his…

In “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’Connor, the grandmother is a lady who believes that she is morally superior to others. The grandmother believes that she is a good Christian lady and that there are not that many good people around anymore. She is closed minded, selfish, and not very self-observant. Whenever there is an opportunity to criticize someone or something the grandmother takes it. She has her own definition of good, a way of how things should be done, and expects the world to meet her expectations.…

“She knew that Bailey would not be willing to lose any time looking at an old house, but the more she talked about it, the she wanted to see it once again and find out if the little twin arbors were still standing””(O’Connor 455). She is the one who insisted on turning back to see the old plantation. Once again it shows how self-centered and selfish she is. When they meet with Misfit, grandmother is the one who recognizes him. If she was smart enough to be quite Misfit probably would let them go.…

The grandmother in Mary E. Wilkins Freeman 's short story, "Old Woman Magoun," is an important controversial character in the plot. Throughout the story, the plot builds up to the critical ending. Considering the time period and setting of the story makes the whole plot understandable as the meaning behind the actions of the grandmother, Old Woman Magoun, are explained. She had raised her granddaughter, Lily, in a very isolated, yet caring and loving way to protect her from the harms of the world. Though it may be a dubious act on behalf of the grandmother to let the granddaughter die without warning her of the poisonous blackberries, her intention to maintain Lily 's innocence, resonating as the theme of the story, became her priority as the…

in this scene it is evident that the Grandmother is selfish and although they have already did away with her family she feels she's was worthy to live merely because she was a lady (Bedford/St. Martins 151). The Grandmother repetitiously tells the Misfit to pray, implying that he can be saved or redeemed of his sins and that the Lord will have mercy on him if he spares her life, in contrary she couldn't even formulate the conscience to pray and she…

This adds to the irony of the story because the grandmother was supposed to symbolize “good” people in society. Yet it took a gun being held to her head, and her entire family being killed for her to finally realize that even she was flawed. Meaning she is no better or worse than anyone else. O’Connor then goes on to depict the grandmother as a “good” person though her actions. The grandmother acts like a “good” person on the road by “...would not let the children throw the box and the peanut butter napkins out the window” (O’Connor 140).…

The grandmother is a rather average grandmother, with her share of human faults, she remembers me of my grandmother, because they act exactly alike. The grandmother isn't a selfish and superficial woman. She is also a loving lady because she cares so much about her family, that also reminds me of my grandmother because no more how much she annoys me, I still love her and that is exactly what the family in the story probably feels like, The grandmother is very sympathetic, because when the Misfit was feeling bad for him, she was calmly talking to him and trying to convince him out of killing them, but that didn’t work because, in the end, he kills the whole family. The Misfit isn’t sympathetic because doesn’t feel bad for the family when their…

It’s very clear that we are seeing a change in the generations, especially when looking at the narrator and her grandmother. The message we get from analyzing their relationship is that they were raised with an entirely different perspectives on segregation and people of other race. The granny symbolizes the elder generation’s incapability to change their view on the black population, where the innocent and less judging young girl is more open-minded toward all people. This message is closely linked to the main theme of the story. This story is set in a time with divided opinions on the view of black people, and with the civil rights movement, the March in Washington in 1963 and also the KKK’s reunion in mainly the southern states5, so the different opinions of the narrator and the grandmother send the message that this was also the situation of the whole country.…
