It looks like he i enjoys seeing her begging for own life. She is trying to save herself by pleading to Misfit “You’ve got good blood! I know you wouldn’t shoot a lady! I know you come from nice people! Pray! Jesus, you ought not to shot a lady. I’ll give you all the money I’ve got!”(O’Connor 461). All the talking that she does has no affect on him. Although Misfit pauses and seems to ponder the thought of not killing her, the audience and Grandmother both know that her death is inevitable. Despite knowing she is going to die, she tells the Misfit how good of a man he is, and to just pray to God about everything that is going on in his life. The turning point for the audience, though, is when the Misfit says, “I was a different breed of dog from my brothers and sisters” (O’Connor). This makes Grandmother’s inevitable death even more…

in this scene it is evident that the Grandmother is selfish and although they have already did away with her family she feels she's was worthy to live merely because she was a lady (Bedford/St. Martins 151). This adds to the irony of the story because the grandmother was supposed to symbolize “good” people in society. Yet it took a gun being held to her head, and her entire family being killed for her to finally realize that even she was flawed. Meaning she is no better or worse than anyone else. O’Connor then goes on to depict the grandmother as a “good” person though her actions. O’Connor throughout the story depicts the grandmother as a selfish and demanding character. O’ Connor describes her as trying to “manipulate her son, her insistence on dressing well so that people know she is a lady, and her superficial interactions with her grandchildren are funny but reveal her pride and pettiness” (Larson). The author appears to be signifying that the grandmother is trying to take all the attention and care only about herself. The grandmother’s actions of dressing well enough to be able to be told she was a woman if found suggest that she more worried about herself rather than her grandchildren and so on. O’ Connor adds “Now look here, Bailey, see here, read this, and she stood with one hand on her thin hip and the other…

There are two types of motives that self-serving people use; for personal gain and for self-preservation. Self-serving people only think about themselves and they rarely ever concern themselves with the thoughts or feelings of others. Generally, the majority of people share the self-serving characteristic in one way or another, and most people are often self-serving without even realizing they are doing so. In the stories “A story of an Hour,” “A Rose for Emily,” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” all three protagonists, Mrs. Mallard, Emily Grierson, and the grandmother all share the self-serving characteristic. Upon learning of her husband’s untimely passing, Mrs. Mallard takes the news, she weeps for a moment and retires to her room.…
