The Grandmother never uttered a word about God or prayer until she was down on her luck, the Misfit acknowledging that the woman “would have been a good woman if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute in her life”, did not spare her life merely cause she was a lady, what she interpreted as being morally good (Bedford/St. Martin 152). The paradox of the story is that in the beginning the Grandmother discusses with her son how she could not answer to her conscience if she allowed the kids to go the way of the Misfit but it was her that the kids should have been protected from. I learned from this story that one should take a deep look at self first before casting judgment on others and that every sinner is capable of earning God's mercy. One way that I can relate to this story is that when life is going my way I'm happy but when thing aren't so good I will then rely on my faith to pull me through, whereas, I should have always acknowledge God.
