Staged in a small southern town, now Commerce, Georgia, Cold Sassy Tree is presented from Will Tweedy’s, a young teenager, perspective. The book focuses on the Blakeslee family deaths and an unexpected marriage, which create conflict and tension between the town and the family. Overall, Cold Sassy Tree is a journey about the deaths of family members, the effects of those deaths, and the way the affected people deal with them. When Grandpa Blakeslee gives the house to Miss Love the rest of the family is not happy. After Grandma Blakeslee died Grandpa Blakeslee married Miss Love over the condition that his house would be written over to her. Grandpa Blakeslee’s house should’ve been Mary Willis’ and Aunt Loma’s because they are his heirs. But because Grandpa chose Miss Love over his daughters, the rest of the family becomes enraged. The family’s anger split them apart. Furthermore, Mr. Tweedy and Mary Willis should’ve gone to New York, but Miss Love said that she wanted to go and Grandpa Blakeslee took her because he didn’t know Mary Willis planned to go. Because Miss Love took Mary Willis’ opportunity to go to New York she got very upset. She also got very mad at her father and his wife. She grew farther away from her dad and became more distant with him. If Grandma was still alive she knew this wouldn’t have happened.
