Misfit Justice: A Good Man Is Hard To Find

In this segment of our textbook we focused on the section titled; Misfit Justice, which was divided into five different section. The section I enjoyed the most and will talk about was titled “A Good Man is hard to Find.” This story was about a man named Bailey who intends to take his family on a trip. Bailey’s initial intentions were to take his family to Florida but after discussing it with his mother he was convinced to go to Tennessee instead. She convinces her son by showing him a news article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about an escaped murderer who calls himself The Misfit last seen in Florida. The family ends up being involved in an accident because Bailey loses control of the car and it flips over ending up at a ditch. Trembling in the ditch, the family waits for help, the grandmother then notices a black hearse coming down the road, and she flags it down until it stops. Three men come out of the car and begin to talking to her. All three have guns. The grandmother says that she recognizes the leader, as The Misfit, who instantaneously confirms this, saying it would have been better for them all if she hadn't recognized him. The Misfit's men take Bailey and John Wesley into the forest on a hoax, both are killed. The men then return to take the children's mother, the baby, and June Star for the same purpose. The grandmother begins imploring for her own life. When The Misfit talks to her about Jesus, while speaking he becomes agitated and angry. He snarls into the grandmother's face and claims that life has "no pleasure but meanness". She becomes confused and thinks that The Misfit is going to cry, so she reaches out and touches his shoulder tenderly, saying "Why you're one of my
