Introduction
Charisma. Is it a trait we are born with or is a skill that can be honed and sharpened? Are there attributes in our personality that lends itself to charisma? Is this attribute, trait or skill a positive or a negative? The answers to these questions are as convoluted as the definitions of charisma. This word finds in origin in Greek meaning “divinely inspired gift” (DuBrin, 2013, p.73). Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines charisma as “having great charm or appeal” (2016). How could appeal be negative? The Cambridge online dictionary defines charisma as “a special power that some people have naturally that makes them able to influence other people and attract their attention and admiration” (2016). Special powers? Is this why we can easily recognize the most magnetic person in a room? Charisma is an enigma. It is difficult to define. How does one use this special power to become an effective leader? Charismatic leadership is credited with improving workforce engagement, can outperform non-charismatic leadership and have incredible communication skills (Owen. 2015). Given these fine qualities, shouldn’t the charismatic leadership be encouraged by more organizations as the latest leadership quality must-have?
