A form of racism that still exists today is socio-economic racism. Socio-economic racism is the placement of low-income people and minorities in dangerous environments such as areas with high crimes, toxic wastes, etc. In the past, black and white people lived in segregated areas according to race and today it is not any different.

In the American Life Podcast, the school Michael Brown went to at Normandy, the worst city in Missouri, was mostly black and poor. In January of 2013, Normandy lost its accreditation from the state due to its lack of graduating students and school organization. Therefore, Missouri made a transfer law that gave students the right to transfer to a nearby accredited school for free but Normandy only provided one transportation to the school which was in a “white” neighborhood. They made transportation difficult for the black students so that they do not come to the white school. This type of segregation constrains black people from moving upwards in society and thus leads to institutional racism.
