The idea of an quintessential “American Dream” is built on a foundation of American ideals that have persisted in the American and international cultures for centuries. The American Dream is the ultimate achievement of perfection and prosperity for anyone who aims to live an American life envied by all their peers. Since the 17th century immigrants have traveled to America so they could achieve their dreams in a new country filled with opportunities. The American dream has evolved as Americans themselves evolved, changing as quickly as the country that fostered it. Today the phrase “American Dream” brings to mind a much different idea than it did two-hundred, one-hundred , or even fifty years ago. Though the picturesque experience the American Dream contains has adjusted to reflect a rapidly developing world, the ideals the American Dream is built on have largely remained the same. For me, the American Dream is that ideal of a perfect life filled with prosperity as it is represented in today’s world. My American Dream is a life composed of an outstanding job, a loving family, and the possibility of a bright and ever-evolving future. My American Dream must contain an outstanding job because working extremely hard and having something to strive towards are two important aspects of my personality.
