Amelia Earhart was one of the many figures who were known in the roaring 20s for her determination in her career and for fighting for equal rights for women.
Amelia Earhart was born in July 24 of 1897 in Atchison, Arkansas. Her father was an alcolic and there were always fights between him and her mother. Most of the time, Earhart's mother sent her and her older sister to her grandparents’ house. Since she was little, she always enjoyed exploring the neighborhood, climbing trees, hunting for rats, and taking rides on sleds; she was always up for the challenge. She attended Hyde Park High School in Chicago, where she excelled at chemistry. After graduating, she went to Canada to visit her sister for a few months. Once she arrived, Earhart noticed the many injured soldiers that were coming back from fighting in WWI and she volunteered as a nurse’s aid for the Red Cross. She spent her free-time with the pilots because it was something unusual and she was very interested in the planes. In 1919, she enrolled to attend Columbia University to study medicine. In 1932, she became the first woman to pilot a plane across the Atlantic Ocean after breaking all the stereotypes built up for women. She worked for the Cosmopolitan career as a writer and encouraging women to learn to fly planes, or to just be whatever they would want to be.
