Alexis de Tocqueville: Weaknesses of Democracy

Most of the researches consider publications of Alexis de Tocqueville as longsighted and even prophetic. That actualizes the issues which Tocqueville investigates in his publications and books. For instance, Tocqueville in his “Democracy in America” foresees the future confrontation of Russia and United States. The reason for that is two different perception of life – for Americans the motive is a freedom, for Russians - service.
Another significant problem which Tocqueville analyzed in his “Democracy in America” is the weaknesses of democracy and the relations between equality and liberty, which is the issue of continuing relevance.

According to Tocqueville, there is only one remedy from such transformation into tyranny – freedom. For Alexis de Tocqueville, freedom is a responsibility not only for our own life but for a life of all society as well; this is a right of every human being to determine him/her own destiny. Freedom is also a way for the resumption of rent social relationships between human beings.
In accordance with Alexis de Tocqueville, only freedom can prevent human beings from the condition of the social isolation and separation. Thus, only freedom can stop expansion of despotic government and tyranny.
To conclude, it should be noticed that Alexis de Tocqueville made a great contribution into the political philosophy of democracy. The problem of “perfect democracy” is very actual till nowadays, yet, there are a lot of discussions among researches about the criteria for the “true democracy”.
The main value of Alexis de Tocqueville’s research is the definition and investigation of very subtle and significant political and social problems which are actual even today (such as isolation, separation of human beings from society; democracies’ transforming into tyranny). Alexis de Tocqueville did not come out against democracy as a political regime; he just showed and predict weak features of the democratic order which can easily turn it into tyranny.
