Agbonkhianmeghe Orobator summarized his lecture by using the expression of Pope Francis: “In the Bible, the God who liberates and saves is the same God who created the universe...” in order to proceed to the interrelationship of creation, salvation, and ecology. Relying on the background of African “religions” and spirituality, Orobator presented four important points: an affirmation of a vital commission between humanity and the environmental ecology, restoration of harmony or balance in co-creation, holistic understanding of humanity and environmental ecology or a cosmic dimension of salvation, and a universal covenant or communion between humanity and nature.
2. A cosmic dimension of salvation requires foremost a holistic understanding of humanity and environmental ecology. Orobator claims, “Salvation of the universe occupies a central place and the global discourse on sustaining ability, climate change, ecological integrity and the imperative to cultivate a progress of ecological virtues.” As an animist, he recognizes that animism is a “creative process of ecological integrity.” This “religion” believes that the spirit is embodied in all natural objects with power, energy, and vitality. However, diverse cultural values and spiritual practices are able to save the cosmos if human beings know how to unite and share these significant and spiritual resources together. According to Neil Omerod, “The individual must align himself or herself with the society, and the society with the cosmos.” There are “anthropological grounded meanings and values” that could help humanity lives in harmony and balance with the cosmos.
