The African countries of Libya and Botswana each hold dramatic differences in their regime type. The international research firm Freedom House (Freedom House 2016), places Libya- a country under authoritarian rule and civil unrest- at an aggregate freedom score of 20 out of 100 on its annual freedom report making Libya one of the least free countries in the world. Botswana sits at an aggregate score of 73 making it one of the freer countries in the world (Freedom House 2016). What could cause and explain the differences between these two African countries? I argue that the common political theory of the “resource curse” is the strongest cause of whether a country is democratic or authoritarian. The term “resource curse” encompasses the significant social, economic, and political challenges that are unique to countries rich in oil, gas and minerals (“Resource Curse” 2015). The amount of natural resources a country possesses influences every piece of a country’s political and economic culture especially as it pertains to the actions and policy of its leaders. I will give a general overview of explanations for regime type given by other scholars with a special focus on the amount and type of natural resources. Using findings from scholars I analyze the two countries approach to the resource curse and support my hypotheses of this factor affecting their regime type.
