Yet it wasn’t till 1770 when Lieutenant James Cook declared the eastern part of Australia as an English colony, and called it New South Wales. When the first settlers were arriving; they were ordered by the King of England to treat the locals with respect, and to bring them in to empire. On January 26,1788, a mass influx of British colonist made their way to Australia, which the Aborigines refer to as invasion day. (Siddique) With such many people coming into the country, resources would be limited. Which would lead to clashes between the settlers, and indigenous people. Even though peaceful resolutions were attempted they would constantly fail, due to random acts of violence between the two groups. Unfortunately, much like the Native American population of the United States the Aborigines of Australia would fall to the diseases that the English brought with them from Europe. This allowed settlers to truly take power away from the indigenous people. With the colonist in power they separated themselves from the locals, even though there were attempts to integrate the groups. The United Nations decided to step in, and declared what Australia was doing to their native population was an act of genocide. (Weir) The U.N stated that this type of law while affect the native population negatively for generations to come. With the U.N now bringing this practice to light to the world, Australia would stop this practice, and even claim that all the number given were exaggerated for political reasons. This would not be the last time Australia has had issues with the United Nations due to how they treat their native population.
