As an employee, I would prefer to work under a person-based structure because there is an immediate correlation between my knowledge and training and my pay. Under a job-based structure, I would have to hope for a promotion in order to receive higher pay. However, from an organizational standpoint, a person-based structure could be costly, costs that may or may not relate to the ability of the workforce to reach organizational objectives. In order for this type of structure to be warranted, the organization would need to ensure that the increases in pay were based on the acquisition of skills and knowledge that are beneficial to the organization and/or the position an employee held. A job-based structure may be less motivational for employees as there are only so many positions within a company; superior performance may not necessarily be immediately rewarded with promotion.
