Airplanes have a negative impact on the environment. Planes emit gases and substances such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, lead, and black carbon. In the European Union, greenhouse gas emissions from aviation increased by 87 percent from 1990 through 2006. Airplane tickets are at extremely high costs for middle class families. Airplanes can also bring destruction in other forms such as bombing. Once in an interview regarding the death and destruction of the bombers of World War 2, Orville Wright once said, "We dared to hope we had invented something that would bring lasting peace to the earth. But we were wrong ... No, I don't have any regrets about my part in the invention of the airplane, though no one could deplore more than I do the destruction it has caused. I feel about the airplane much the same as I do in regard to fire.
