INTRODUCTION
Similarities and differences exist between what Adolf Hitler sought in central Europe in the 1930s to what Vladimir Putin is seeking in the former Soviet Union, more so Ukraine through the establishment of eastern European policies since 2011. For their implementation to be successful, it all depends on gas and oil exports. A reduction in price or a partial boycott is likely to bring a heavy blow to the economy of Russia, an incident that is likely to see the regime loses the support it currently enjoys. On the contrary, Hitler’s policies were essentially based on his political ideology and brutal force which implies that it was less dependent on and less vulnerable to international factors (McKenna 320). Unlike Hitler, who did not enjoy vast funding from oil and gas exports, Putin has an advantage of maintaining the status quo in that he can do whatever pleases him with his neighbors and no one is likely to scrutinize him. He has this leverage because from a global perspective, oil and gas play a crucial role in projecting power and if he decides to increase the price of these goods, then there is a possibility of an international as well as economic crisis. This is the “soft weapon” with which Hitler’s did not have to advance and execute his policies effectively.
CONCLUSION
The policies advanced by Hitler and Putin have similarities and differences. They both employed militia with strong dictatorial high-handedness through embracing espionage, diplomacy, threats, military power and intimidation.
